Flutterby’s Music Reviews

Regina Spektor – Far

spektor-far Regina Spektor’s 5th album but only the 2nd studio produced album, you will notice more than just her and her piano.  From hearing less produced albums by her, I have to say that the studio produced albums tend to feel like they take away a little of Regina’s quirky strange personality that is highly infused into her earlier music.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love this album.  I am fully sold on Regina and her sound.   This Russian-American brings songs where she gives us a “Dolphin song” (Folding Chairs) and sings about a lost wallet (Wallet).  The album goes in many directions but the songs are blunt expressions of Regina telling it like she sees it.  Those views sometimes are strange allusions to religion, Blue Lips has Adam & Eve taking blame for this mess we’ve gotten into “They started out beneath the knowledge tree. Then they chopped it down to make white picket fences”  and Laughing With gives honest perspectives “No one laughs at God on the day they realize that the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes”.   She takes us to her world, story telling songs that remind us of science fiction (Machines) and fables (Genius Next Door).  It took a few listens for me to warm to some of the songs.  The songs seem a little radio friendly and over produced, but you find her goofy personality sandwiched between the stuff shirts and realize that it’s a natural progression for an artist and trust that she will work out the kinks in working with a label in a studio.  I give this 4 out of 5 butterflies.

My favorite songs: Eet, Machines, Genius Next Door

Blog Poll

Since no one is commenting I decided to get some feedback one way or the other. I can’t improve if I don’t know something’s wrong.

MJ or “This Is It”

I think Chloe said it best. I agree with her view of Michael Jackson’s death and the media and public’s response. Thanks for putting it out there.

Things That Make My Heart Flutter

Random Bits of Happy

This was a trying week as I had medical testing that drained me and stressed me out a bit.  However there are a few things that made my week better, made me smile and kept me on a positive mind set.

bangles and bracelets 2

*Saturday Terrell & I went to the Riverside Arts Market to see what was on the tables.  I bought some cheese from a nearby farm & some fresh organic red bell peppers.  We had a healthy lunch from the food vendor booths and then headed to my favorite thrift store.  At the thrift store I found 2 really neat bangle bracelets one plastic red & white and obviously vintage and a metal gold & silver that I’m guessing is from the 80’s.  I also came home with some funky picture frames and with a coat of black paint they were ready for some prints that I needed to frame.

*Tuesday was craft night and also my Dad’s birthday.  We were going to dinner as a family and I was upset about missing craft night.  I thought it out and went early so I could at least get the pattern and find out how to make it.  It’s a cute little retro owl and I picked colors of orange, yellow and green fabrics.  My owl pillow makes me smile.  I also got super crafty earlier and made my Dad’s Father’s Day card and made a messenger bag from an old pair of jeans.  All my crafts were very successful!  I gave myself big pats on the back!

*The best best best thing that happened this week happened yesterday evening.  My IPOD!!! It’s working correctly again.  It was working on the level that I could play it but every time I tried to hook it up to my computer so I could load my new music it went to “verifying…”.  It did this for 2 weeks and I finally let the ipod run completely out of battery and it powered up hooked to my computer correctly.  Look for 2 album reviews next week…Grizzly Bear & Regina Spektor.  Oh yay!  I have an 80G and only have about half of it used so I was going to be really sad if I had all that unused space forever!  Happy happy day!

*Last but not least my honey was feeling really burned out from work.  He took a few days off and has been spending the day with me.  We are silly together and have been spending lazy mornings in bed, afternoons running around town, lunches of grilled cheese and leftover curry (separately!) and lots of hugs and kisses.  Maybe tomorrow we can go walk the beach!  Of course I haven’t been good about looking for a job…I’ve been preoccupied.

What random bits of happy made your hearts flutter?

How do you survive in FL in 100 plus degree days? Light clothes, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, fans, popsicles, lots of water to stay hydrated and of course you have to stay stylish.

My favorite local links

I love that Jacksonville has all these small companies that start with an idea and end up with a great store!

Here are my current favorites:

Emily – Anomaly which isn’t up to date but will tell you how to find the most amazing store.  With local brands, and also the cool and hip fashion of the now, and of course handmade wares from her own two hands.  She also keeps a blog that updates her Tuesday night craft night and thrifty finds.

Burro Bags – I’m told the owner is a Jack Diablo.  I haven’t met him yet…or maybe I have and just don’t know it.  I go to Jacksonville events a lot and fail to get names of people I talk to!  But anyway…the bags and wallets are made from recycled billboard materials and I visited the store/place of creation the other day and as soon as I have a job again I will be purchasing one of the bags.

Arturo Clothing Co. has a great spot on Etsy and I just found a blog as well thanks to google.  They hand print tshirts in fun interesting designs and I keep running into them at stores, art walk and at the Riverside Arts Market.  Their shirts are high quality American Apparel and if you can’t find them at the locations I mentioned they ship out from purchases online as well.

I know there are more.  Tell me about what you have found in town.

Röyksopp – Junior

Norway’s Royksopp released their 3rd album Junior back on March 24th. I am still listening to the songs and picking out favorites.

The twosome added female vocalists/collaborators including Swedish superstar Robyn, Lykke Li, Karim Dreijer (The Knife!!! Hullo~I love them!) as well as fellow Norwegian Annell Drecker.

This album is everything I love about electronica, it is upbeat with strong vocals and thumping bass lines that make you want to move!

I love the songs “The Girl and The Robot” and “Tricky Tricky”. I keep going back to these songs and find myself playing them over and over. They remind me of the old Raver Anthems that make me want to pull out my glow sticks and run go find flyers for circuit parties…but I’ve grown out of that…no really I have! 😉

I give this album 4 1/2 out of 5 butterflies for making me want to dance around the house reminicing my old raver days.

Random Bits of Happy

Rollerderby! Duval!

*Thursday I popped into a Bealls discount outlet looking for one thing and didn’t find it but came out with a super cute 50’s style bathing suit, turquoise flip flops and two hair bands for under $35.

*Friday I spent the day in said bathing suit laying by the pool (thanks to a friend copying their complex pool key for us) listening to tunes and reading a book. An indulgent day that I savored.

*I went to my favorite used bookstore, Chamblin Bookmine, and bought the rest of a vampire series that a friend referred me to. The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward has me hooked.

*I am finally starting to get called back on jobs that I’ve applied for. This is a relief just because I was beginning to lose hope that jobs were really out there.

*Our city’s Rollerderby is the bomb. They didn’t win last night but they invited the winning team to Starlite Cafe for the after party and showed the Tallahassee ladies how Jacksonville gets down. A good time was had by the girls and their fans(and friends!).

*I love summer TV programming. So You Think You Can Dance is on, this show makes me hella happy! Plus Weeds and True Blood!

I’ve got two new albums that I’m listening to that I just got this week.

Placebo – Battle For the Sun.

They don’t change their sound by much. It’s dark and broody and melodic. I like that “Julien” feels like it fit in with the last album Meds. The title track is a little too repetitive for my liking but I like the beat, it just feels like half a song was written for it so they repeat the same lines over and over. I think my favorite song is “Kings of Medicine” it has the right depth and darkness to the lyrics and the music has that touch of sorrow that makes me love their sound, it’s the last song on the album and leaves me wanting more. I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 butterflies.

The other album I have been listening to is another favorite artist of mine that seems to be very hit or miss for me and I seem to like every other album.

Moby – Wait For Me.

Moby likes to experiment, and I love that about him. Sometimes he hits a homerun and othertimes he strikes out. His last album was disco and I scanned through the songs and skipped out on it big time. This new album he returned to the electronic new agey sounding vibe with the soulful gospil singing. He mixes it up like usual and some songs are just guest singers, some are duets with his raspy voice acting as back up and others are just him belting it out. It’s a mellow album that I would listen to while taking a bubble bath and I give it 4 out of 5 butterflies.
